Mesoscale eddies induce variability in the sea surface temperature gradient in the Kuroshio Extension

The Kuroshio Extension (KE) region is one of the most energetic regions in global ocean where prominent mesoscale dynamics persistently occur. spatial distribution and temporal evolution sea surface temperature (SST) gradient eddies KE are investigated. SST can be applied for identifying fronts, within two times radii composited to quantify impact on frontal activities. Depressed gradients identified with both polarities, but variance reveals that a large located north anticyclones along south periphery cyclones. further separated into groups depending their location relative main path KE, as background fields largely different. pattern, e.g., monopole dipole features, variation fully studied over lifespans eddies. results show significantly weaken internal induce horizontal redistribution surrounding regions. Cyclonic elevate fronts variability varies each group This study offers quantitative analyses relationships between important understanding world’s oceans.
